Michelle Smith, PT

Michelle Smith Bio Page Image - PSMy enthusiasm for Physical Therapy goes back to the 6th grade when I was inspired by my father’s Physical Therapist, Mary Jo, who helped him to learn to walk again after a serious car accident. I knew then that I wanted to pursue a career in Physical Therapy and I have never looked back!

I studied Physical Therapy at the University of New England in Biddeford, ME, and there earned my bachelors in Physical Therapy in 1984 after which my career adventures began, with a carload of friends and I heading south to kick off my Physical Therapist career in an in-patient rehabilitation center in North Miami, FL. It was here I discovered my passion for working with children, and became NDT (Neuro Developmental Techniques) certified in pediatrics in 1991. The first 15 years of my career was then centrally focused on serving the pediatric special needs and young adult brain injured populations. Both challenging, as well as professionally and personally satisfying; these clients allowed me to “dig deeper” to find the foundational components of dis-ease in the various body systems while simultaneously realizing my foundational belief that our bodies can be, and are innately designed to be, self-healing when properly balanced.

During the last 15+ years, I’ve continued to hone in on developing my manual therapy skills, with a focus on cranio-sacral therapy/somato-emotional release and IMT (Integrative Manual Therapy). In addition to a life-long passion with working with children, I have very much widened my scope to include treating adults with neurological, auto-immune and chronic-pain diagnoses, to name a few, with a special interest in Lyme Disease. My current focus in the pediatric population is the birth to 18 months age group; however, I love working with anyone from birth to 105! I’m also involved in a project promoting pediatric mobility during play. Check out the website: www.GoBabyGoNH.com

In my spare time I am passionate about keeping an active lifestyle. Most Saturday nights you will find me on the dance floor at a contra-dance or local ballroom enjoying Latin, Smooth Swing, Hustle and more! I also love connecting with nature via alpine skiing, snow-shoeing, kayaking, day-hiking, and travel as well as spending time ‘playing’ with my 8 nephews. I am a “workshop junkie”, so in addition to professional Physical Therapy workshops, I enjoy Spiritual/personal growth workshops and retreats. Finally, I have a special interest in natural health, herbal remedies, and nutrition, but don’t worry I’ll rarely turn down a piece of yummy dark chocolate!

No matter whether it is work or play I believe life is meant to be joyful and fun and I seek to let that attitude reverberate both inwardly and outwardly in all my relationships.
